Mahpiyawastewin

I am still confused regarding something my grandmother told me long ago as I have not found it to be backed by census records, etc. She says we have a Mdewakanton ancestor named Mahpiyawastewin. I am related to Nancy Stone/Wakute/Wapaha and also the Chapman family line through Willie.

Where's the connection?

I know there is a Nancy Mahpiyawastewin who is mother of Owen Lovejoy, but I do not have anything to indicate Owen Lovejoy related to the above.

Owen Lovejoy's mother was Nancy Mahpiyawastewin. His father was Asa Lovejoy. Nancy was a sister of Samuel Stone of Santee, and an aunt of Nancy StoneMyrickWakuteWapaha.There is your connection.
I have at least a half dozen women named Mahpiyawastewin in my records.to my knowledge,there are no Mahpiyawastewins on the Chapman line.

Funny, alot of women named Nancy or Mary. It gets so confusing! I need to get my grandma to tell some stories again and share her pics. As my memory goes, she told me that is was Sarah Myrick whose Indian name was Mahpiyawastewin, and that she was also called Blue Eyes?

Also - who is Sarah's father? I have heard three different names but she was born too late to be Andrew Myrick's daughter.

In 1864 Nancy Wapaha has a daughter named Sarah(in Crow Creek) Sarah wed Eugene Hoffman and had many children...

Nancy Stone also married Louis Jewitt at some point, and had children with him. I was wondering if Jewitt was Sarah's father because Hermin1's chart lists her father as De Witt. Could it be a mis-spelling? Or is De Witt a whole different man?

Also, we know that Mary Myrick who married Rev Hinman is daughter of Nancy Stone and Andrew Myrick. the next child listed being born is Sarah, but Sarah's nickname is Hapstin which would mean she is 3rd born???

Hi Hermin1, I am in awe of your knowledge. Do you have Mahpiyawastewins probate that Nancy testified she was the sibling of Samuel Stone. My line goes like this and I am searching for documents. Julia Sky, mother of Eliza (Tasinagiwin) Lovejoy, married to Asa. They were parents of Mary Lovejoy, who married Alex Spider, who beget Lillian. Lillian Spider married Earl Williams and had many children including Eugene and then us. I was told that Julia Sky was the daughter of Chief Wakute. Do you know if this is true? Do you have any documents? I contacted a descendent about this but she's far too busy to help. I know the mad rush to get these papers is over but I'd still like to know.

twiliyums: i am sorry I do not have mahpiyawastewin's probate. All i have is my notes from the Testimony of Nancy Myrick re. Mahpiyawastewin,Sisseton Allotee #763 being her Aunt, and naming several of Samuel Stone(Nancy's Uncle)'s siblings.
One or more were 1/2 siblings . Nancy 's testimony was dated 26 April,1921.Apparently their mother was married several times.
You will have to contact NARA to get her Heirship Report. Mahpiyawastewlin was Sisseton enrolled.
Look in the Santee Agency Registers to find Mary Lovejoy's baptismal record.
Nancy Myrick married Andrew Myrick the trader. They had two daughters, Elizabeth(died bef. 1870) and Mary. Mary wed REv. Hinman.
nancy had Sarah with John DeWitt.
nancy had several children with Louis jewitt: John who died young, and Maggie who wed George lawrence.
There are no records for marriages by Indian Custom which is how Asa wed both wives.
Julia sunnawin was a dau. of Wakute. She was a sister of Ben Sky.their mother was Zitkadansakoyakewin,2nd wife of Wakute.
Ben Sky married twice, and his second wife was a Julia ?. this Julia? also wed A.D. Graham and they had a daughter, Clara(not Emma) wife of Joe Cash.this Julia also married Alex. Redwing
As i understand it the Hoffmans and Chapmans were close.
eugene and Sarah Hoffman's daughter mary wed William Chapman, and they had 2 daughters.

all we know is that a Julia Suina/Sky was the mother of tasingiwin and Mahpiya Wastewin.
We don't know if she is the same woman as Sunnawin who married unknown and had hannah Sky(wife of Owen Lovejoy). that is why you need to lookin the Santee Mission Baptismal Register and the Santee registers Books 1,2,and 3 for your ancestors.
You also need to get Asa Lovejoy's heirship Report from NARA.

Hermin1: You mentioned above about someone testifying that someone was their "Aunt"....I would be curious to know that when a Native says "Aunt"...is it the same type of relationship that is commonly known or, as in so many cases, can the "Aunt" mean other things?

Hi Natalie, Happy New Year, and to you also Hermin1. Thank you for everything you do to help others. I know you don't get paid for it and I really appreciate your help. Nancy Stone testified at Mahpiyawastewins probate that Samuel Stone was her sibling. So far I gathered the sister wives are Julia Sky's daughters. I've been corresponding with another descendent and she said that the BIA accepted a family history chart made by Paul Brill that stated Chief Wakute was Julia's father. If you have any info that negates this please let me know. I'm going back to eating my Xmas peanuts now. God bless.

natwick ,nancy Myrick in her testimony identified mahpiyawastewin as her aunt. this is acording to the Indian ustom of designating relatives. her mother Horpicasnasnawin was a sister of Samuel Stone(nancy's Uncle)and Mahpiyawastewin. Now i had been told that Asa Lovejoy was married to two sister brides. i am asuming, but do not know for certain if this is also not according to Indian custom. Tasinagiwin died before Mahpiyawastewin did. In her testimony ,Nancy Myrick could not recall her(Tasinagiwin) name.

Twiliyums: thanks fo jaring my memory banks. According to my records,Benjamin Sky married Jane(nOT Julia)Zitkadanyesewin(sp) and they had 3 kids; Fred(he died young ),Mary and Emma Sky.
Jane was first wed to A.D. Graham and they had a daughter Clara Graham.
So then,Sunnawin9or Suina),Julia was the mother of Tasinagiwin and/or Mahpiyawastewin.

Is there any info on Ben Sky on this site or the other site? I've tried searching but the name is too short.

Try searching for him by his Indian name - Itesakiyadan-and English name in the Census records and the Santee Agency Registers.

That's great, I didn't know his Dakota name. Do you know the year of death of Julia Sky? I had a trial period on Ancestry and all the hits I got said she was born in 1801 but no death year. I know she was in her early 80's and living with each of her daughters and appear in both censuses. Meanwhile I shall peruse the censuses on this site.

Which Julia Sky are you referring to? Ben Sky' wife or the mother oof Julia Suinna(sp)?

I got a response from NARA and she wasn't able to find anything on Wakute and Julia because their death had to be within a time period. I've spoken with other descendents but they're from Wakutes first wife and didn't have papers for Zintakadansakoyekewin. Do you have any idea where else I could look.
